AA, A, BB, B and C: Ontario girls hockey levels explained

What AA, A, BB, B and C mean in Ontario girls rep hockey, how teams are placed, and how house league and development stream fit in.

The short version

Ontario girls rep (competitive) hockey is split into levels so that teams play others of a similar strength. From the top down, the levels are AA, A, BB, B and C. A U15 AA team plays other U15 AA teams in its league, a U15 B team plays other U15 B teams, and so on.

The letters describe the level a team plays at, not how good any one player is. Plenty of strong players play on B and C teams, and every level has close, exciting games.

What each level usually means

  • AA: the top competitive level. Bigger associations usually have AA teams, and players often travel further for games and tournaments.
  • A: a high competitive level, a step below AA.
  • BB: the middle of the competitive levels.
  • B: competitive hockey with a strong focus on development.
  • C: the entry level of rep hockey, usually in smaller centres or for associations with fewer teams at an age group.

Which levels an association can enter depends on things like its size and how many players it has at each age. A small town might have a single B or C team at an age group, while a large association could have AA, A and BB teams at the same age.

House league and development stream

Not every girl plays rep. House league is recreational hockey run by local associations, with less travel and a lower time commitment. Development stream (DS) programs sit between house league and rep in some areas, offering extra skill development without full rep travel.

Many tournaments have separate house league and development stream divisions, and you can find them on our tournaments page.

Leagues and regions

Within each age group and level, teams are grouped into regional leagues (for example East, Central, South and West) to keep travel reasonable. Teams from different regions mostly meet at tournaments.

You can browse every league on our leagues page, or search for your team on the teams page to see its standings, scores and player points.
