How the Ontario girls hockey season works
A parent's guide to the Ontario girls rep hockey season: tryouts, league games, standings, tournaments, playoffs and provincials.
Tryouts and team selection
Rep teams are picked at tryouts. Most associations hold tryouts in the spring for the following season, and some add evaluations in late summer. Your local association posts dates, fees and age groups on its website.
The regular season
League play usually starts in September and runs through the winter. Each team plays a set schedule against the other teams in its league, which is grouped by age, level and region.
Games are a mix of home and away. Schedules sometimes change because of ice availability or weather, so it's worth checking your team's page before you leave home.
How standings work
Teams earn 2 points for a win and 1 point for a tie. Teams are ranked by points, and tie-breakers (such as head-to-head results or goal difference) separate teams with the same points. The exact tie-breakers can vary by league, so the official league standings always have the final say.
Every league page on Girls Hockey Hub shows the standings, recent results and upcoming games. Open your team from the teams page to see its record, last five games and player points.
Tournaments
Most rep teams play several tournaments a season. They're usually weekend events with round-robin games followed by playoff games for the top teams. Tournament results don't count toward league standings, but they're often the highlight of the year.
We list every OWHA-sanctioned girls tournament in Ontario, many with live scores, on our tournaments page. See our tournament weekend guide for tips.
Playoffs and provincials
After the regular season, leagues hold playoffs. The season builds toward the OWHA Provincial Championships in the spring, where teams from across Ontario compete for a provincial title at their age and level.
How teams qualify for playoffs and provincials depends on the league and level, so check with your team's coach or manager for the details that apply to your team.
