How the Ontario girls hockey power rankings work

How Girls Hockey Hub's unofficial Ontario girls hockey power rankings are calculated, and what they do and don't mean.

What the rankings are

Girls Hockey Hub's power rankings rank teams across Ontario within each age group and level, for example every U15 A team in the province, not just one league. They're Girls Hockey Hub's own unofficial rankings, built by us from every league and tournament result we track. They aren't OWHA standings and don't affect playoffs or provincials.

How a rating is calculated

Every league game and every tournament game against a team at the same age and level counts. Each game is scored on the result (a win counts for more than a loss) and the goal difference, then adjusted for strength of schedule: how strong the opponents were. Because every team's rating depends on its opponents', the ratings are calculated together until they settle.

That means beating a strong team counts for more than beating a weaker one, and a close loss to a top team isn't a disaster.

Keeping it fair

  • Goal difference counts up to 7 per game, so running up the score doesn't help.
  • Teams need a minimum number of games before they're ranked.
  • Teams with only a few games are kept close to the middle until they've played more, so one or two results can't put a team at the top.
  • We show the top 25 teams at each age and level, or the top 10 when a level has fewer than 30 teams.
  • Rankings update twice a day as new results come in.

Why rankings change through the season

Early in the season, most games are within a team's own region, so it's hard to compare teams from different regions. As tournaments bring teams from across Ontario together, the rankings get sharper.
