U9 to U22: Ontario girls hockey age groups and birth years

Which age group your daughter plays in for the 2026-27 Ontario girls hockey season, based on her birth year.

How age groups work

Girls hockey age groups are based on birth year, not grade. A player's age group is set by the year she was born, and it stays the same for the whole season. The 2026-27 season runs from fall 2026 to spring 2027.

Most age groups cover two birth years, so in each group about half the players are in their first year and half are in their second. U18 covers three birth years and U22 covers four.

2026-27 season

  • U9: born 2018 or 2019
  • U11: born 2016 or 2017
  • U13: born 2014 or 2015
  • U15: born 2012 or 2013
  • U18: born 2009, 2010 or 2011
  • U22: born 2005, 2006, 2007 or 2008

Each new season, every birth year moves up by one. For 2027-28, add one year to each of the years above.

If you're unsure, your local association's registration page will confirm which group your daughter registers in.

First year vs second year

Being a first-year player in an age group is completely normal, and so is finding the jump a little harder. Players are often a full step younger than their second-year teammates, and that gap closes quickly over the season.
